The Odyssey, According to Penelope was composed and premiered in Taipei, Taiwan during the summer of 2011. The piece is dedicated to and inspired by my daughter, Penelope Joy Bobo, who was a little over one year old at the time of composition. While the title would lead one to believe that the piece is inspired by the Greek character Penelope (wife of Odysseus), the piece has nothing to do with Homer’s Odyssey. The five short movement are meant to represent several images from childhood to which both children and parents relate. Though my daughter is still quite young, and likely I won’t remember any of our pre-nap battles, the running around, stumbling, babbling, or adventures at the park, this is her odyssey, or so far anyway.
