The solos in this book were written with the following ideas in mind: To provide solos for solo and ensemble contest; to provide solo material for the young timpanist to have fun practicing and performing; and focus on the fundamentals of timpani playing (tone, legato, marcato, staccato, common rhythms and rests, common musical styles, rolls, muffling, tuning, cross sticking, accents, grace notes, tempo changes, various notation styles, time signatures, and dynamic markings).
