Description
Canticle by Stanley Leonard is a solo piece to be played on four pedal timpani.
Stanley Leonard, principal timpanist of the Pittsburgh Symphony since 1956, is one of the leading percussionists in the United States. He studied at Northwestern University and is a graduate of The Eastman School of Music of The University of Rochester. Before joining the Pittsburgh Symphony, Mr Leonard was a percussionist with the Rochester Philharmonic and the Kansas City Philharmonic. He has received national and international acclaim from colleagues, conductors and critics not only for his participation as an ensemble member, but for his versatility as a percusiion soloist: primarily timpani concerti with orchestra.
Outside the concert hall, Leonard is an educator, clinician and composer. His compositions for solo timpani, mallet, and mixed percussion solos and ensembles are performed world-wide. His innovative method, Pedal Technique for the Timpani, was published in 1989 by Ludwig Music Publishing Co., Inc. He was Senior Lecturer in Percussion at Carnegie-Mellon University for twenty years and has been a guest clinician and lecturer at many colleges and universities.
