Two Fountains was commissioned by Sabrina Vasquez and The Wichita State University Dance Ensemble during the 2002-2003 academic year. Vasquez choreographed one of Bobo’s earlier compositions, Balaphuge, and asked him to compose two more pieces in a similar style. The two movements of this piece explore the motions of water. The first portrays a slow-motion picture of water with an ostinato played by the right hand throughout the entire movement, coupled with independent or one-handed rolls to produce a sustaining effect in the left. The second movement, which is much faster, uses alternating quintuplets and fast lateral techniques on the marimba to produce a rippling and cascading effect.
