The 9’s by Daniel W McCarthy

The 9’s was written for Brian Frasier of The Boston Conservatory, a timpani student of Keith Aleo, Director of Orchestral Percussion for The Ziljian Cymbal Company in Boston, MA. The piece is a play on the timpani solo excerpts from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, second movement. The characteristic dotted rhythms of the opening timpani solo are accompanied with groove music of hand drummed sounds in the accompaniment and caricatured samples of the orchestral music. At times, the timpani soloist plays duets with the samples of the actual timpani solo.
