Omphalo Centric Lecture – Score by Nigel Westlake

The title refers to a painting by Paul Klee, whose straightforward and uncomplicated style served as inspiration. African balofon (or xylophone) music, with its enduring ostinati, cross-rhythms, and variations on straightforward melodic segments, is another major influence on the composition. It aims to celebrate life by rhythm, vigor, and movement, much like African music. The original intention of its composition was for the Sydney-based percussion quartet “Synergy”.
