Liaoning by Philippe Spiesser

Liaoning by Philippe Spiesser delivers a high-energy percussion ensemble experience for six players, inspired by the vibrant festival traditions of northeastern China. Commissioned by the Aujourd’hui Musiques Festival and premiered in Perpignan in 2005, this five-minute piece channels the cultural richness of Liaoning Province—often called the “golden triangle” for its location between the Yellow Sea, the Bohai Gulf, and the Yalu River.

In this composition, Spiesser captures the bold sounds of red drums that drive Chinese celebrations. He uses untuned percussion to craft a layered and dynamic soundscape. Players perform on instruments including a splash cymbal, three high toms, two medium toms, a woodblock, high and low tambourines, and four maracas. Each player contributes a rhythmic voice, building polyrhythmic textures that engage both performers and listeners.

Philippe Spiesser—a leading French percussionist and composer—brings a global perspective to percussion literature. In Liaoning, he encourages ensemble members to listen deeply and respond with rhythmic precision. Rather than mimic Chinese musical tradition, the piece channels its energy, joy, and communal spirit.
