Towering out of Iceland’s interior wasteland is the majestic volcano Hekla, often referred to as the uncrowned queen of mountains in southern Iceland. Ancient tales say that the souls of the condemned travelled through Hekla’s crater on their way to less pleasant places. Hekla is an active volcano and has erupted five times in the 20th century, and last in February 2000. This piece won the runner up prize in the PAS composition award 1997.
