Contemporary rag – unlike many rags wherein the xylophone is truly the “solo” voice, in Cactus Hip Rag, three voices share prominent melodic materials – xylophone, vibraphone and marimba I. While the xylophone part contains the “flashiest” melodic and rhythmic figures, all the parts have interesting musical features. Up-tempo, audience-friendly piece that could be programmed to open or close a recital or concert in a lively manner!
