In the Garden develops over a repeated bass line: the descending chromatic progression from C to G heard at the opening. While the structure is traditional there are some cluster sounds used, as well as notes of the Blues scale. No direct programmatic content is needed in the piece. However, there are particular gardens whose stories were inspirational, most especially the Garden of Eden, and Gethsemane. The piece was commissioned by Bill Abright in 1975, and to him it is dedicated witch affection and respect.
