Mills College was one of the first liberal arts colleges to offer a modern dance degree, beginning in 1941. Cage served as accompanist and taught music in the dance department where he wrote this work in 1940 for one of the students. Recently discovered in the Mills College archive, this will be a major addition to the Cage oeuvre. ‘Opening Dance’ (EP 68139), a work for piano, was also discovered recently and is projected to be published in July 2007.
