Written to celebrate the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, the piece draws on elements of African music. Using 1 percussion player on marimba and other perc, it begins and ends with a hymn like theme reminiscent of Zulu choral singing. The middle section is based on Bata rhythms with the saxophones mimicking the drum patterns.
