A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Mendelssohn arr. Brian Slawson

Brian Slawson brings forth a brilliant percussion arrangement of the “Scherzo”

Written for a large mallet ensemble of 12 players

Scherzo contains a lot of notes in compound meter that require quick playing at soft levels

Mendelssohn composed the incidental music for Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the behest of King Frederick of Prussia while serving as music director at the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Now, Brian Slawson brings forth a brilliant percussion arrangement of the “Scherzo,” a movement that underscores the antics of Puck, a clever jokester in the magical world of fairies.

Written for a large mallet ensemble of 12 players, A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Scherzo contains a lot of notes in compound meter that require quick playing at soft levels. While challenging, it’s also intended to remain light and playful throughout, with all dynamics being relative.

This piece comes with a full, bound score and includes a CD-Rom containing an audio recording and all individual parts available for printing.

Above the Clouds by Joe Moore III

Looking out the window once the plane has broken through the clouds gives me instant peace because it is such a beautiful sight – almost indescribable. The piece is essentially to aid in my own fear of flying by putting more of a focus on the part of flying that is most enjoyable, which is being Above the Clouds.

Anitra’s Dance from Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 by Grieg arr. Brian Slawson

Originally scored for strings and triangle, and with a great deal of pizzicato playing in the strings, it allowed for a fairly seamlessly transfer to the idiom of percussion ensemble. The timbral palette is expanded by the addition of several nonpitched percussion instruments, and some of the melodic material has been enhanced by arpeggiated harmonies and rapid scalar passages, particularly in the marimba voice.

Composed by Edvard Grieg, Anitra’s Dance is preceded by In the Hall of the Mountain King in the famous Peer Gynt Suite. The result is a lovely classical adaptation that can serve as a quiet programming contrast.

Anitra’s Dance comes as a full, bound score and includes a CD-ROM containing individual parts and a recording.

As above, As below by Nathan Daughtrey

As Above, So Below delves into the universe of Norse mythology. The three-movement work for percussion orchestra centers on Yggdrasil, the “Tree of Life,” with branches that extend to all nine of the worlds that make up the Norse mythological universe. The tree’s three roots connect three of these worlds—AsgardNiflheim, and Jötenheim—which make up the three movements of the piece.

At The Dawn Of War by Kevin Erickson

Employing some very unusual instruments (i.e. anchor chains, garden weasel) At the Dawn of War is a very emotional work born from an idea to write a piece about a day of war and then interrupted by the events of 9/11. A challenging piece for even the most advanced ensembles, this one bring your ensemble to the brink.
