Ian Finkel’s arrangement of Jealous of Pianists is for marimba, guitar, drums and bass. The marimba part is written out in full, giving a non-improvising marimbist the chance to play a truly remarkable jazz tune.
A tranquil opening introduces the Gamelan-like pattern on which the piece is based. The structure of this piece is palindromic and revolves around a lengthy middle section featuring many contrasts of mood.
2000cc uses many contemporary sounding dance rhythms and has a drumkit part throughout. It is a series of variations with many changes of tempo but mostly consisting of material influenced by different dance forms including latin and funk.
An energetic samba is followed by a 12/8 African passage. The central section is in ‘suspended’ time and includes an improvised solo, after which the opening material returns followed by a brief tranquil coda.
