John Hicks began his life long affair with drums at the age of twelve, when he joined the Sea Cadets. After joining the RAF School of Music at twenty-three, he played in various bands before serving with the RAF Central Band. On returning to civilian life, John played in London and the North West of England in orchestras, brass bands, big bands, pit orchestras and many jazz combos. Over the last fifteen years teaching percussion has become a big part of John's life and he wrote Beat That! so students can learn and have great fun at the same time.
